Arlington National Cemetery – Located on the south West bank of the Potomac river in Arlington, Virginia, the Arlington National Cemetery is easily accessed via Metro through the Arlington Cemetery Metro station. The Cemetery is open daily October through March from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and April through September from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sites include the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Amphitheater, the Custis-Lee Mansion and the graves of Presidents John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft. Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier occurs every hour on the hour during all months except summer, when it occurs every half hour. Ford's Theatre and Lincoln Museum – Located 511 10th Street between E and F Streets, N.W., the theatre is best reached by Metro via the Federal Triangle Metro station. The theatre is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed December 25. Ford's Theatre is an active theatre and may close temporarily with little notice, especially just before and after productions for rehearsals and set changes. The theatre will also be closed during matinees. The Lincoln Museum and the Petersen House will remain open for tours during matinees and rehearsals. Mount Vernon – The historic home of George Washington, Mount Vernon is located 16 miles outside of Washington D.C. For information on how to reach it by bus, contact call (202) 289- 1995 or visit http://www.grayline.com/. By Metro, Take Metro Rail's Yellow Line Train to Huntington Station in Virginia. Exit at the lower level (Huntington Avenue) of the station to catch a Fairfax Connector bus to Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon is open to the public April through August from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. September, October and March from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and November through February 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is open daily including Christmas. Octagon House – Located at 1799 New York Avenue, N.W., it is accessible by Metro via the Farragut West station. Designed by William Thornton, who also designed the U.S. Capitol, the Octagon House served as James Madison's White House following the destruction of the real White House by the British Army in 1814. Old Post Office-Pavilion – Located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., it is easily accessible from the Metro via the Federal Triangle or Metrocenter stations. The pavilion is open daily Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 12 noon to 7 p.m. March through August, and Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 12 noon to 6 p.m. September through February. National Parks Service offers a tour of the bell tower with a splendid view of the city. The lines for this tour are normally much shorter than for the Washington Memorial. US Navy Museum at the Washington Navy Yard – Located at 805 Kidder Breese SE, on the banks of the Anacostia River. The original buildings date back to the 1800's & contain the Navy Memorial Museum & Marine Corps Museum. The Navy Museum is free, however due to increased security at the Washington Navy Yard, the Museum's hours have changed. Tour groups and individuals who do not have military or Department of Defense identification and want to visit the Museum should call in advance for an appointment.
